“Buru Garra” got 56th national award 2009

Posted on February 12, 2010. Filed under: My Films | Tags: , , , , , , , |

Well Known Jharkhand based filmmaker Sriprakash’s film Buru Garra got 56th national award 2009.

An article about this film:

People’s struggle on celluloid

Ranchi, Oct. 30: The story of the life and struggle of tribals in Jharkhand will be shown to the national audience at a film festival in Kerala and also to students at Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi.

Titled Buru Gara (Hilly River), the film is directed by Sri Prakash, a Ranchi-based documentary filmmaker, It is a tale of two tribal women of Jharkhand who have charted out a difficult, yet different, path for themselves.

Dayamani Barla and Nirmala Putul, the two protagonists of the film are known faces in the state. The director makes an effort to project the life and struggle of the tribals of Jharkhand through the characters.

While Barla is a journalist-turned social activist, Putul is a poet who vividly describes the struggle of a woman in a male-dominated society. Barla is shown in the film as championing the cause of the tribals and Dalits. On the other hand, Putul writes poetry from her own life experiences.

The 30-minute film shot in the rural areas of Jharkhand will be screened in the Third Festival of Documentaries and Short features in video for John Abraham National Award in Kerala.

“As my film raises the core issue of development and displacement, for the audience at the national level, it would be an occasion to look at these critically,” said Sri Prakash while talking to The Telegraph.

The film is scheduled to be screened on Wednesday.

Sri Prakash said the film represented the real mental agony that the Jharkhand’s tribal and Dalit villages are going through due to onslaught of industrial developments.

Earlier this month Buru Gara was broadcast on the Doordarshan. The film also has been screened at an international film festival organised at the India Habitat Centre in the month of August and Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies, New Delhi, in October 25-26 this year.

Apart from Buru Gara, Sri Prakash has several other documentary films to his credit.

The list includes Buddha Weeps in Jadugora which has won four international awards, Buru Sengel (The Fire Within) which has bagged three awards, Kishki Rakhsa (on the proposed field firing range at Netrahat), and Another Revolt (on the proposed Koel Karo hydel power project), among others.

Synopsis

We have been hearing many stories about the human rights violations before and after Operation Green Hunt was announced. Allegations and counter-allegations have been going around. Fact-finding investigations have uncovered the atrocities security forces are committing in these areas, but now those very findings are being questioned.

At such a time it is crucial to present the reality and tear the veils obscuring the truth. When the State Declares War on the People is a 15-minute trailer by Gopal Menon based on his recent coverage of the ground reality in Chhattisgarh. This short film contains exclusive interviews with victims and their testimony including 1 ½ year old Suresh who had three fingers chopped off his left hand, an old man who was electrocuted and whose flesh was ripped off with knives, women raped by Special Police Officers and CRPF. The film also presents the views of Arundhati Roy and Mahesh Bhatt, two eminent citizens who have been closely following developments in Chhattisgarh. The clear intention of the State – to wipe out all resistance through terror in the name of fighting the Maoists – is demonstrated in this film.

About the Director

Gopal Menon is an activist-filmmaker focusing on caste, communalism and nationality. He was arrested twice while trying to go to Lalgarh and beaten with rifle butts and lathis. He was detained in Dantewada too. This is a trailer of a larger film on the Indian State’s war on the people.

Some of Menon’s earlier films are Naga Story: The Other Side of SilenceHey Ram!! Genocide in the Land of GandhiPAPA 2(about disappearances in Kashmir) and Resilient Rhythms (a rainbow overview of the Dalit situation) amongst others.
