Directed by Mani Kaul: An enigmatic drama about the strange twists and turns of the Indian class system, Naukar Ki Kameez/The Servant’s Shirt centers on a simple clerk and his wife. Through encounters with his co-workers, neighbors and nearly everyone else around him, the couple (like most people they know) jockey for economic and social position, hoping to rise to a better position in life, but often ending up back in the servant’s class. This film opened at the 1999 Rotterdam Film Festival.
